The Winery

Located on the banks of the Garonne river, Château Beau Rivage is a small, organic winery with 8ha of vines. The meticulous selection of grape varieties, and the traditional methods used in cultivating the vines and in the vinification process, ensures that Château Beau Rivage consistently produces high quality wines that have nothing to envy of their more prestigious Médoc neighbours.

Awarded one of the “World’s 50 Best Value Wine Buys” by Decanter magazine in 2003, the wines of Château Beau Rivage have also amassed a host of gold medal awards from competitions such as the Vignerons Indépendants, Bordeaux Wine Challenge, and International Wine Challenge of Bruxelles.  In 2010, wines from Château Beau Rivage have won Gold medals at the Concours Général de Paris agricultural fair, the Concours des Vignerons Indépendants wine fair, the Concours de Bordeaux, and the Concours National des Caves Particluières.

Château Beau Rivage produces red and rosé wines from the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec vines that grow in the lime clay soil.

Region

The famous Bordeaux region is France’s largest, producing 25% of the country’s wine. Most of the wine made is red, but there are also some very good white wines to be found, especially the sweet wines of Sauternes. The climate is characterized by hot summers and relatively mild winters thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Macau-en Médoc, just 24 km / 14 miles from the centre of Bordeaux, is superbly placed. On the left bank of the Garonne river, it is found at the entrance to the Route des Châteaux, home to some of the world’s most reputed and expensive wine from Margaux, Cantenac and Pauillac.

Christine Nadalié is the owner and oenologue of Château Beau Rivage. She comes from a lineage of coopers, and the nearby family firm is now the 5th largest barrel maker in the world.

It’s therefore no surprise the emphasis that Mme Nadalié puts on using the traditional oak vats and the highest quality barrels in the fermentation and maturing of her wines. Also central to the winemaking and management of Château Beau Rivage are Christophe Issartier and David Maradenne, the Managers of the cellar and vineyard.

Gourmet Odyssey’s chosen wine is the namesake Château Beau Rivage.

This Bordeaux Supérieur red wine is made from a blend of 5 different grape varieties, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and has an ideal balance between fruity and woody flavours.

The wine is aged for 18 months in a mixture of new and old French oak barrels before the final blending.
