The Winery
Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard is one of leading wineries in Chablis, producing great quality wines across the range of Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru wines. Since 1999, a large portion of the estate’s vines has been certified as organic or biodynamic, or is currently under conversion.
The 11ha of vines chosen for the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience, “La Boissonneuse”, is nurtured using the biodynamic approach, whereby the life of the vines and their surrounding environment are best respected. Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard is a very active voice in the Burgundy biodynamic wine movement.
Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard has received numerous medals and accolades over the years. The 2008 vintage of their Chablis – Domaine de la Boissonneuse, the wine chosen by Gourmet Odyssey, won the Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge, silver medal at the Concours des Vins de Lyon, and was recommended at the Decanter World Wine Awards. The 2007 vintage was selected as a favourite in the Guide Hachette des Vins 2009, and features among the wines chosen for the Nouveau Guide des Vins Bio 2010 / 2011 (New Guide for Organic Wines 2010 / 2011).

Region
Chablis is renowned throughout the world for its fine white Chardonnay wines. Dry, fresh, zesty and mineral, Chablis wines are the result of a unique terroir, based upon the clay limestone hills that date from the Kimmeridgian era of the Jurassic age. Many years ago, the sea covered the land here, and when the seawater gradually retreated, it left behind the fossils and oysters between the strata, that the vine roots draw from to give the aroma and taste characteristic to Chablis.
The Chablis region is located in the north east of Burgundy, less than 200km (120 miles) from Paris. The vineyards from the Chablis Appellation stretch between 20 villlages. The small commune of Préhy, home to our partner Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard, is 8km (5miles) from the village of Chablis.
After marrying Claudine, a winemaker’s daughter, Jean-Marc Brocard also fell for the charm of the vines. He bought his first plot of vines in 1973 at Préhy. With the help of his wife’s family and other local winemakers, he grew the estate and quickly forged its reputation as one of the leading Chablis wineries.
Today the winery is managed by his two children, Julien Brocard and Céline Brocard-Guegen. Céline’s husband, Frédéric Guegen is responsible for the vineyards, and Jean-Marc remains very involved in the life of the estate. A true family business!
The Chablis « Domaine de la Boissonneuse » is the wine selected by Gourmet Odyssey at Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard. This wine is produced biodynamically, from the growing of the grapes through to the making of the wine.
The grapes come from vines that have not received any pesticides, fungicides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers for at least three years. The vineyard is nurtured with biodynamic treatments, prepared with cow manure, silica, and a diverse range of plants, to protect and fortify the soil and vines.
The work in the winery is based around the lunar cycle. No industrial yeast is used. Part of the alcoholic fermentation process and ageing happens in stainless steel vats, the other part in wooden casks, normally for 12 months before bottling.
The nose mixes freshness, density and complexity. It reveals hints of liquorice, mint, and candied citrus fruits (clementine, orange and lemon), which evolve to notes of grilled almonds, and vanilla.
A strong personality reveals itself on the palate, bringing together energy and minerality. The finish is fresh and thirst-quenching.
The wine is bottled 10-12 months after the harvest.

Harvest Experience Day at Domaine Jea-Marc Brocard in Chablis
Another weekend, another region and a new Harvest Experience Day! This time we were at Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard in Chablis with some of our Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience clients to harvest the Chardonnay grapes!
As soon as the clients had all safely arrived, we headed straight into the vineyard to receive our orders from Frédéric Guegen, the Vineyard Director. He split us into two teams of harvesters and porters.
Armed with a pair of secateurs and a bucket, the harvesters paired up to pick the grapes from both sides of the vine rows. Paying particular attention to their fingers, the harvest began! Read more...
